Identification Systems
Plant ID System
The identification module of the system allows for easy and rapid identification of over 160 terrestrial,
aquatic and wetland plant species. Two different identification systems are included:
The first ID system, also known as the expert ID system, utilizes expert system-type programming, is highly interactive and closely simulates the exchange that takes place between experts and non-technical personnel. The first system allows for quick and easy identification and teaches proper questioning techniques as well. As questions are answered, the system continually narrows down the remaining possible species and asks only relevant questions (i.e., questions that aid in eliminating species from the list in an effort to save valuable time). Each question is based on taxonomic characteristics that are relatively easy for non-technical users to locate and identify. Possible answers are provided pictorially to ensure accuracy and avoid confusion over botanical terms and species characteristics. Once a plant has been identified, the user is given an opportunity to verify that the plant identified is the actual plant in question. Verification is performed by asking more specific questions based on the given plants unique characteristics to ensure the initial identification was correct.
The second identification system allows the user to choose questions (i.e., characteristics) from a list of all possible questions. As questions are answered the system narrows down the possible plant species. Unlike the first identification system priorities or weights are not assigned to individual questions and the user has full control on which questions to answer.
To access the expert system type ID system click the “Expert ID System” link on the left.
To access the free selection ID system click on the link labeled "Free Selection ID Sys".
Chemical ID System
The chemical ID system assists users in the selection of herbicides for a selected plant. This system presents site specific questions to aid users in selecting an appropriate herbicide for the given site and target plant species.
By clicking the “Chemical ID Sys” link on the left, you can select a plant from a drop down box. Once the plant is selected, click on the submit button to begin the Chemical ID System. The chemical ID sys is similar in operation as the plant ID system. Once all questions have been answered, a list of chemicals that are appropriate based on plant species and site characteristics are displayed. The user can then select a chemical and view information on herbicide use, application rates, toxicological data, etc.
Herbivore ID System
The Herbivore ID system aids users in the identification of various native and
naturalized insect herbivores found on aquatic and wetland plant species by
presenting specific questions on various characteristics of the included
herbivores. Once a herbivore is identified the user can obtain detailed
information on feeding damage, overall damage, and biology. This herbivore ID
system is similar in operation to the plant ID system and the chemical ID
system.
