Geology
and landform are often used as a framework in various classification systems;
along with soils and climate, they are a major determining factor in vegetation
and hydrologic patterns. Tables 1 (
) and 3
(
)
from
Warne and Smith (1995) show typical geologic/landform classifications and parameters
that may be used in other classification systems. Links to information about
geology and landform can be found at http://cda.mrs.umn.edu/~geology/linx.html
The source for USGS maps and other geology/landform data is the U.S. Geological
Survey mapping page, http://info.er.usgs.gov/.
Classification systems within EMRIS that have a significant geology/landform component include: Cowardin, Bailey's Ecoregions, National Marine Sanctuary Program, USFWS ESM 103, HGM Classification of Wetlands, and Rosgen's Stream Classification.
