Species Accounts have been written as part of the Wildlife Resources Management Manual under the Environmental Impact Research Program. Accounts contain sections on Status, Characters and Measurements, Population Attributes, Habitat Requirements, Management, Census and Sampling, and Sources of Information. Those available are:
Birds
Ruffed
Grouse (Bonasa umbellus)
Northern
Bobwhite (Colinus
virginianus)
![]()
Snowy
Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus)
American
Woodcock (Scolopax minor)
Mammals
Eastern
Gray Squirrel (Sciurus
carolinensis)
Profiles on threatened and endangered species in the southeastern U.S. have been developed under the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program of the Department of Defense. The profiles each include sections such as Taxonomy, Description, Similar Species, Status, Life History and Ecology, Habitat Requirements, Habitat Assessment, Impacts and Cause of Decline, Management and Protection, and Inventory and Census. The
Birds of North America
http://www.birdsofna.org/
is an ongoing commercial project to write an account on each of the bird species
that nest in the United States and Canada. As of October 2000, 520 profiles
are completed. Bird species with profiles are listed in alphabetical order by
scientific and common name (
)
and on the Web at: http://www.birdsofna.org/cumindex1_520.html.
"Birds of North America" is supported by The American Ornithologists'
Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences of
Philadelphia. A user can either subscribe to the entire system, or buy accounts
individually from a third-party vendor (http://www.buteobooks.com)
for $7.50 each plus shipping.
Each species profile (information take directly from the home page) includes:
· Detailed line drawings and a photographic portrait of the bird in its natural habitat;
· A color-keyed map indicating the species' breeding and wintering ranges throughout North America;
· Nature, timing and routes of migration;
· Details of life at the nest: eggs, young, feeding, predation;
· A full description of the species' distinguishing characteristics;
· A description of breeding, migratory and wintering habitats;
· Detailed accounts of feeding habits, songs and calls and other behavior;
· A comprehensive bibliography;
· A graph of the species' annual cycle; breeding, migration and molt;
· Full data on breeding success, life span, mortality and disease plus demographic and population information;
· Conservation and management issues, including effects of human activity, status of essential habitats, prospects for survival and more.
Mammalian Species Accounts are produced by the American Society of Mammalogists. Individual accounts can be purchased for $3.00. A cumulative index of species for which accounts are available is found at:
http://www.science.smith.edu/departments/Biology/VHAYSSEN/page4.html. New accounts are published each year, summarizing the current understanding of the biology of the species including systematics, distribution, fossil history, genetics, anatomy, physiology, behavior, ecology, and conservation. The accounts vary from 2 14 pages depending upon what is known. Other publications from the Society are available from http://www.mammalsociety.org/publications/index.html.
