Program Summary

Environmental protection is a key component of the Corps' Civil Works Planning process. Restoration of aquatic and riparian ecosystems has also become a primary mission for the Corps. Corps projects include nearly 12 million acres of land and water resources that are vitally important to sustaining the environmental health of our nation. The Corps also supports the Department of Defense in managing 25 million acres of lands situated in a wide variety of ecoregions with a diverse group of resources of special interest. The Ecosystem Management and Restoration Research Program (EMRRP) is the Corps' responsive, tactical research and development response to the demand for new and expanding technologies to address the need for ecosystem assessment, restoration, and management activities at the project level. The EMRRP provides a rapid, cost-effective technology to meet the Corps' most pressing research and development needs in functional assessment, restoration, and stewardship of high priority ecosystems. The EMRRP is targeted toward ecosystems of particular concern to the Corps, namely: streams, riparian corridors, wetlands, and special aquatic sites. Technologies developed under the EMRRP build upon a sound understanding of ecosystem functions, which lead to sustainable stewardship of Corps resources. EMRRP products focus on cost-effective, science-based impact assessment, restoration, and management technologies for the Corps' water resource managers. These technologies are presented in concise, "how-to" guidance documents that provide rapid, low-cost, innovative techniques and methods for high priority field needs and promote environmentally sustainable projects. Focus areas for the EMRRP include:
  • Ecosystem Assessment-Impacts and Mitigation Requirements
  • Ecosystem Restoration
  • Stewardship and Management on Corps Lands
