Research Areas

Ecosystem Assessment - Impacts and Mitigation Requirements
Develop and improve technology to quantify and document environmental impacts of flood control, navigation and other types of water resource projects consistent with NEPA, ESA, and other relevant environmental requirements. Develop biological criteria for aquatic and terrestrial organisms that can be integrated with hydraulic, geomorphic, and water quality data to forecast changes in habitat quality and quantity. Identify and evaluate effective mitigation techniques for large landscapes typically impacted by civil work projects. Develop technology to quantify mitigation benefits that compensate for impacts to species of special concern (T&E, economically important, etc.).

Ecosystem Restoration
Develop, evaluate, and refine state-of-the-art restoration technology for high priority ecosystems. Include both structural and non-structural measures that fundamentally restore important ecosystem functions or characteristics through innovative, cost-effective design, engineering & construction guidance. Demonstrate successful, low maintenance techniques and approaches to ecosystem restoration that are consistent with other water resource project objectives. Develop criteria to measure success and failure of restoration projects.

Stewardship & Management on Corps Lands
Develop and demonstrate sustainable engineering and resource management strategies for multi-purpose, Corps-managed lands and waters. Provide efficient inventory methods to quantify and assess natural resources. Provide guidelines for conservation of plant and animal species of special concern. Develop adaptive management strategies to maintain and enhance the ecological health of rivers and river basins while continuing to provide flood control, navigation, power generation, recreation, and cooperative management strategies with adjacent land managers.
