Fate and Effects research began in the early 1970s to support the Corps dredging programs which included development of testing manuals for sediment contaminants. This was quickly expanded to waste characterization, environmental monitoring, numerical modeling and physical and biological processes. Results of this research were used to assist with waste disposal practices and ground-water monitoring at DoD facilities such as Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Pine Bluff Arsenal.
Environmental Fate and Effects Research at WES encompasses a variety of programs in support of Department of Defense (DoD) Agencies, other Federal Agencies, and various state agencies. Historically, this environmental R&D was developed from the Corps' Civil Works programs with major reimbursable work from military and civil sponsors. In many cases, R&D has been implemented in a cooperative environment with other Federal Agencies (such as the EPA) to provide uniform guidance to sponsors.
