A successful pest control method is one that is effective, affordable, and safe. While broad-spectrum, synthetic chemicals have been the traditional approach to pest management, the effects on human health and the environment have fostered the development of optional control approaches. One such alternative is biological control - a method which has proven to be an economical and environmentally acceptable tool in the integrated management of many pest species (Debach and Rosen 1991, Crawley 1992a, Rodgers 1993). Broadly defined, biological control is the use of one species for the suppression of another. Two groups of organisms have potential as Dreissena control agents: selectively toxic microbes and natural enemies (Molloy 1998).
