High Risk of Infestation
Recommended Preventive Measures:
- Monitor local water quality and physical parameters for any changes monthly.
- Complete a risk inventory every 6 months, using recently collected data.
- Pay careful attention to the status and/or spread of zebra mussels within the local area.
- Begin a monitoring program for adults and veligers on a weekly basis for all months with ambient water temperatures above 12 ºC.
- Establish a working relationship with state and local agencies that have access to detailed physio-chemical data sets as well as current local zebra mussel information.
Design basic control measures that can be implemented quickly, in the event that infestation occurs. Appropriate long-term control strategies should be designed as well.
- If adult zebra mussels are observed attached to substrates in the area, begin an appropriate control program immediately (see the Management and Control section).
