Recommended Preventive Measures:

• Monitor local water quality and physical parameters monthly for changes.
• Complete a risk inventory annually, using recently collected data.
• Pay careful attention to the status and/or spread of zebra mussels within the local area.
• Design a basic monitoring program for adults and veligers on a monthly time scale.
• Implement this program if zebra mussels are reported from upstream or near the facility.
• Establish a working relationship with state and local agencies that have access to detailed physio-chemical data sets as well as current local zebra mussel information.
• Design a preliminary basic control program for the facility, site, or area.
• If any adult zebra mussels are observed attached to substrates in the habitat, immediately begin an appropriate control program (see the Management and Control section).
