The presence or absence of a foot is important in distinguishing the four types of shelled larvae. The foot is a muscular organ that extends from between the valve halves and is used for locomotion.
Please note that in poorly preserved specimens, the foot may not be visible. When using the interactive identification system, select the button labeled "Unknown" if there is any doubt as to the presence or absence of a foot.
