Most of the groups and species represented in this system have surface appearances that do not have evenly spaced ridges or striations. The surface may be relatively smooth or even rough, but the striations are, as mentioned previously, not evenly spaced and distinct. This is in contrast to the Asian clam, whose surface contains distinct ridges or striations that are relatively evenly spaced.
