Size is usually a poor identification characteristic, since immature shells (and even adults) can vary greatly in length. However, the adult fingernail clam (Sphaeriidae) is typically less than 1 cm in total length. This is in contrast to all other North American bivalves, whose adults are always greater than 1 cm in total length.
