Umbone Appearance

The umbone is the thickest and oldest portion of the shell. It lies dorsally in most North American bivalves and is typically quite rounded. However, in the dreissenids it is pointed (i.e., acute) and lies anteriorly. In some species of dreissenids the umbone is straight and pointed, but in others it is relatively curved and blunt.
