Veliger Umbone Appearance

The growth of the umbone takes two distinct forms, including one in which the umbone is low and rounded and does not protrude above the shell line and another form where the umbone is well-developed and rounded. Knowing the appearance of the umbone is another step in identifying the basic types of shelled larvae or veligers. These include the straight-hinge form, umbonal form, pediveliger, and plantigrade.
